What Andy had to say;
"Now I know that reviewing a motorcycle tyre is opening a can of worms and offering up one's opinion is guaranteed to raise a bunch of he said, she said responses and even hopefully a few actual experiences.
So let me start this off by letting you all know this is my opinion; not my buddies, nephew's, sisters-boyfriends opinion.
And why am I offering said opinion? Because I feel qualified to offer it, as an off-road adventure tour operator whose annual mileage is in the 40-60 000km range, and in the interest of hopefully advising the off-road adventure riding buyer of a great discovery.
The newly designed BATT X TERRAIN R RADIAL 50/50 dual purpose tyre is due to offer riders who take their off-road adventuring seriously, like the riders that aspire to emulate Chris Birch and Pol Tarres.
This tyre is not aimed at Mr. High Speed all the way to Cape Town with a fully loaded Top box.
Oh no, this is more for the Folks that need to be able to ride to their destination, preferably on gravel roads and then hit the 4x4 routes or Rallye Raid black route once there knowing that they have all the traction and feel they could want.
I have done so much mileage on the BATT X TERRAIN (NHS) full off road purpose rear tyre in a 150/70-18 size, and the reason I've done all those miles is that I can't think of anything I could want more from an adventure tyre. I just keep fitting the things. It's really a great tyre for riders that love to get dirty.
It offers all the grip, the wear, and the confidence that I need when I'm out in the bush or far away from home. And did I mention it's over a thousand rand cheaper then an equivalent Euro brand tyre, all while offering much better mileage than my previous favourite, the Anakee Wild.
Now the new BATT X TERRAIN R RADIAL 50/50 has a more structured tread pattern than the BATT X TERRAIN (NHS), with cleverly linked lugs for a stronger carcass and less flex/wear. But they do this without creating a less-than-ideal solid centre ridge like many others that have tried to achieve the same result.
So, what's the result? A smoother running tyre with longer life expectancy and better resilience to on road abuse such as incorrect pressures, sustained high speeds and loads that err on the ridiculous.
While I haven't tested the high load ability because that's not the way I travel or ever will, I can vouch for its superb road manners, despite the seriously aggressive tread pattern. The cornering ability is top notch and very confidence inspiring, just like the X-Terrain before it and its off-road grip feels just as good.
All in all, this looks to me like my favourite rear adventure tyre just got better, but I'll be able to report back again after I've run through a few of them to really test their mettle".
Stay Lekker,
Andy Biram
